Active Schools Flag 2022-2023
Killusty National School was awarded its first Active Schools Flag in June 2023. The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community.

Local Blitz
On Wednesday June 21st 2023, Killusty Children travelled to the new Town Park in Fethard to play in a Gaelic Football blitz with children from Fethard and Moy Glass primary schools. All the games were played in good spirits and everyone was a winner!
P.A.W.S
As part of our ASF work, all children in Killusty N.S. completed the P.A.W.S programme in May - Primary, Aquatic, Water, Safety. Children learned important tips about keeping safe near water, especially over the summer holiday season. Upon completion of training, certificates were awarded to all.
Physical Activity
ASF - June Activities
During the month June, the ASF committee, with the help of the other children, created active school zones. Children took turns playing at the different stations and activities were changed regularly.
Also in June, children in the Senior Room took part in a Gaelic Football Blitz. Local schools in the area participated and great fun was enjoyed by all the children.
ASF - April Activities
For April we are doing Playground Games at lunch and break times. We have compiled a schedule for the two weeks in April. Pictured below is the schedule for the two weeks.

ASF - March Activities
In March, building on our fitness from our February Daily Mile, we embarked on a 'Run around Ireland challenge. Initially we hoped to run to Waterford City and back but such was the success of the challenge that we ran to Limerick city from Waterford and then back to Killusty. We totalled a distance of 265km.
We are using an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of the distance run by each child every day .
The distance from Killusty to Waterford to Limerick and back to Killusty is 264km according to AA Routeplanner.
We participated in the FAI South Tipp schools soccer blitz entering two teams and had a great day out.
ASF - February Activities
February has arrived. Now that Spring is here we are outdoors again walking and running our daily mile. The ASF team measured the walkway with a trundle wheel and also with the help of Mapmyrun technology.
Swimming continues every Tuesday.
Our walkway lap measures at 250m. To run/walk a mile you have to run 6 and a half laps!
The senior room incorporated a relay to get there mile run some days. We looked at the correct baton changeover and positioning for incoming and outgoing runners.
The ASF team sorted out our P.E. store. They completed an inventory and repaired and pumped as needed. We are shopping for some new yard games and some replacement sport kits.
We also checked out the running videos on the Move Well Move Often Website to make sure we had the proper running techniques.
ASF - December Activities
In December children in the Junior Room got busy with their hula-hoops and skipping ropes.

In December children in the Senior Room worked up a sweat in the classroom to dance the cold away to some of Go Noodle's best songs!
ASF - January Activities
In January children completed the Active Break Everyday. This incorporated fun daily fitness exercises inside and outside of the classrooms. We used GoNoodle, Chair Yoga, Fyffes Fit Squad, Busy Breaks and 10 at 10 activities.

P.A.W.S

Pedigree Day
On May 19th 2023, children from Killusty N.S. made their way to Clonmel to enjoy the annual Pedigree Day hosted by the Museum in association with the Clonmel Show. Children enjoyed spending time with the animals, observing horse shoes being made by the local black smith, watching a sheep being sheared, figuring out stem problems and observing activities of old, such as spinning.
County Semi Final
Hard luck to our U13 hurlers who lost to Lorrha NS on May 17th in the County Semi Final. They played brilliantly and should be very proud of themselves. Best of luck to Lorrha in the final.
In My Shoes Fund Raising
Killusty School supported the In My Shoes Charity Shoe Appeal this year. Pre-loved runners and football boots wee donated by families and sent to needy Township children in Lesotho and South Africa.
Football and Hurling Blitz
Children from 1st to 6th class travelled to Dr Maurice Park on May 9th to participate in a hurling and football blitz organised by Tipperary Coaching and Games. All had great fun and to top off a great day, everyone got a tour of Semple Stadium.
First Holy Communion 2023
First Holy Communion was celebrated in Killusty Church on Sunday May the 7th 2023. We had 6 super VIPs on the day and this year it was an all boy affair. The weather was kind to boot! A very special occasion enjoyed by all.
Cumann na mBunscol
Well done to our U13 hurling team who had a great win today over Skeheenarinky NS in the Tipperary Cumann na mBunscol.
We are now through to a county semi final in the coming weeks. Well done also to our U11 team who played a challenge match against Skeheenarinky and played very well.
Charity Work
The whole school community in Killusty N.S. was gratefully recognised for its recent efforts in raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society. We were delighted to help.
Junior Splash Day
On April 25th our Junior Infant Girls travelled by bus to Clonmel Swimming Pool for our annual Junior Splash. We enjoyed story time in the Library first and after much fun and splashing we made our way to the Clonmel playground for more fun. Enjoyed by all!
Green Schools World Earth Day
April 22nd - World Earth Day - The Earth is in our Hands.
As part of our commitment to our Green Schools theme - Water - Children in Killusty School engaged in environmental based activities to mark the importance of this day. Children in the Junior Room reconstructed an oil spill in water and explored the challenges of cleaning up such a catastrophe. They also completed a whole-class Acrostic poem based on Water and an art presentation with an important message. Children in the Senior Room created very colourful agamographs and looked at ways of reducing our carbon footprint. .

Dafoddil Day
Thank you to everyone who supported our Daffodil Day Bake sale today. It was a great success. Total funds raised were €241.50 for the Irish Cancer Society.
World Water Day 2023
On March 22nd 2023 Killusty School celebrated World Water Day. We completed a WALK FOR WATER activity which we incorporated into our Green Schools work for our Water Flag and also our Active Schools Flag work. On that day we also remembered the people around the world without any access to clean drinking water.

All children in Killusty N.S. participated with pride in the local Community Games Art and Hand Writing Competitions in March. Many medals made their way to Killusty to the delight of the children. Next round - here we come!

Apple Trees
A big thank you to Fethard Tidy Towns who visited our school recently to plant three Apple trees on our grounds. The children saw from start to finish how an apple tree is planted and learned valuable tips along the way.

First Penance
On Wednesday March 15th our 6 boys made their First Confession in the Church of the Sacred Heart
First to Sixth Class enjoyed a very interesting visit to the Tipperary Museum of Hidden History on March 14th. The children got to experience examples of clothing, technology and life in the past. They really enjoyed the tour provided by Julia, Deirdre and Liz. Check out the photographs of our trip below

Rotary Competition
There was great excitement on Thursday the 9th March when Clonmel Rotary club came to present the prizes and certificates of a recent Young Writer's Competition based on the theme of 'Peace'. Well done to all who particpated and thanks to the Rotary club for organising a super competition.
Engineers Week
Second class and third class participated in the Junior Engineers Workshop in Clonmel Library on March 6th 2023. Well done to Kaiden Power who came first for his engineering activity.

Spring Art in Killusty N.S.
FAI South Tipp Soccer
Well done to our white and blue teams who participated in the South Tipperary FAI Soccer tournament in Cahir on the 1st March. Both teams played very well and were unlucky not to progress to the next stage.
The Big Dig
Children in Killusty N.S. enjoyed an Archaeology Day with the School of Irish Archaeology on Monday, February 13th. The children excavated for treasure and made coins the Viking way!

CIAO!
Children in the Junior Room were learning about Italy. We did a project. Then we had an Italy day.
We used clay to make the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum, a gondola and a pizza.

JEP Treats
The senior room children enjoyed a special delivery of chips from the proceeds of their Junior Entrepreneur project, which capped off a very successful programme.

The Christmas Panto
On December 15th 2022, all the children in Killusty school headed to Limerick for the Christmas Panto - Oh yes we did.
Peter Pan delivered - lots of singing along and squeals of delight all round.

Christmas Carol Service
On the evening of December 14th 2022, Killusty School Children hosted a carol service in the local Church. It was well supported by the whole school community and enjoyed by one and all.
Showcase Day
The children had a very successful Showcase Day in the school on December 9th. All products were on display for all to see, but they didn't last long as all were sold out by the end of the day!
Cloneen Craft Fair
Well done to all children who became young entrepreneurs at the Cloneen Christmas Craft Fair. It was a very successful day of business and everyone had great fun.

County Football Final
Hard luck to our gallant U13 footballers who were beaten by a very strong Lorrha side in Templetuohy on November 25th. The girls and boys left it all out on the pitch and should be very proud of themselves.
Hallowe'en Hoolie
The morning of the Hallowe'en break children arrived to school in full scare mode. The fun and games followed and didn't disappoint - from ghostie face to musical chairs to bobbin apple to slime treasure to pass the orange to conker races - enjoyed by all.

Children in the Junior Room made pumpkins, monsters, witches and spider webs. Children in the senior room made ghosts and skeletons.
South Tipperary Cross Country
Well done to all the senior room who participated in the South Tipperary schools cross country in Marlfield on October 26th. The weather was very kind to us, but the ground was very mucky in places. Zoe Thompson came in 4th place and led the 3rd and 4th class girls to the bronze medal. Tristan Bryne did well to come 6th place in a very competitive 3rd and 4th class boys race. Aobhnait Ryan and Ruby Holohan ran brilliantly to come in the top 25. Ewan Byrne finished in 2nd place leading the boys 5th and 6th class to 5th place in the team section.
Autumn Cycling
Throughout October, Children in the senior room enjoyed a cycling programme, learning new skills and participating in cycling safety activities in the school yard.
Maths Week
Maths week took place between the 15th and the 24th of October. Children worked on problem solving tasks and enjoyed Maths hunts, soutdoor activities, maths quizzes and many many games.
Jersey Day
The Student Council organised Jersey Day on October 21st. All the children donned their jerseys in aid of Goal’s charitable work throughout the world.

On October 10th 2022 Two Little Dickie Birds flew into Killusty School for a visit.

Cumann na mBunscol
Well done to our U13 footballers who won the Roinn H football blitz in Holycross on October 5th. Competing against teams from Castleiney, Killea, Cullen and Skeheenarinky, Killusty came out on top to book their place in the County final after the mid-term break. This was a great achievement by this group of children and we are so proud of you all.
Tipperary Primary School's Cross Country
Congratulations to all children who participated in the Tipperary primary schools cross country championships in Thurles on Wednesday the 28th September.
Zoe Thompson ran a super race leading our 3rd/4th class girls home in 3rd position. She was quickly followed across the line by Zara Thompson, Caitlin Feery, Kate Gaule and Hazel Holohan. The girls combined well to finish in 4th team.
Tristan Byrne was our sole representative in the boys 3rd/4th class race and he acquitted himself very well by finishing in 3rd position and winning the bronze medal.
Aobhnait Ryan and Ruby Holohan did the school proud in the girls 5th/6th class race by running very well in what was a competitive field.
In the boys 5th/6th, Ewan Byrne ran a great race to win the silver medal by finishing in 2nd place.He was followed by Aaron Feery, Adam O'Donnell, Gus Purcell, Oliver O'Flynn and Callum O'Flaherty. Our two teams finished in 7th and 13th position.
Well done to everyone in what was a very enjoyable day.
